COSAMS (Carbon Monoxide Submarine Monitoring System) offer continuous real-time monitoring of carbon monoxide (CO) in living accommodation and machinery spaces on submarines.
The maximum permissible concentrations (MPCs) of CO allowed on submarines vary from nation to nation and with the type of boat, owing to different submergence times. A typical continuous exposure level would be between 15 to 25ppm, with higher limits (up to 175pmm) in emergency situations. These limits define the measuring range for the COSAMS unit.
Sources of CO on a submarine include:
Cooking
Fire
Incomplete combustion of fuel in the diesel engines
Chlorate candles
COSAMS uses an InfraRed (IR) sensor which incorporates a gas correlation filter to cancel the effects of interfering gases, particularly water vapour. It is a selective sensor offering a 1ppm resolution with good stability for MPC60, MPC 24 and MPC90 levels. The unit has a built-in auto-zero function to ensure stability during a patrol. The unit has been designed to withstand 22g shock and can be mounted in the engine compartment at temperatures up to 50°C.
COSAMS is designed to operate over the submarine's operating pressure range without giving false alarms.
COSAMS has no cross-sensitivity to hydrogen or water vapour and can be both user and dockland maintained.
