MWD Digital Directional Sensor

SureShot-DDS
This MWD system provides highly accurate azimuth and inclination data for all applications from straight-hole through horizontal drilling. The DDS includes a tri-axial fluxgate magnetometer and three quartz accelerometers in APS’s unique ruggedized package. Simultaneous 16-bit analog-to-digital conversion of all channels assures the best possible directional measurement while rotating.

APS Technology offers local NIST-traceable DDS recalibration in China, Russia, Dubai and the United States, which simplifies R&M logistics and improves asset utilization.

MWD Gamma Sensor with Environmental Monitoring

SureShot-Gamma
APS’s next-generation SureShot? MWD natural gamma sensor employs a rugged scintillation counter and photomultiplier mounted in a specially designed package which provides protection against the high levels of shock and vibration encountered in the drilling environment. In addition, this extensively qualified new design offers environmental monitoring capability and lower power consumption, while maintaining back-compatibility with APS’s earlier sensor designs.

The easy-to-use SureShot surface system scales natural gamma ray data to API units; corrects for borehole size, mud weight and drill collar effects; assigns each point a depth from the depth tracking system; and plots both real-time displays and configurable hard copy logs. Data can be exported in standard industry formats (WITS and LAS).

Calibrated to API-standard units.

A wellsite check source is available to verify tool performance in the field or maintenance repair shop.

Can be programmed to send a combination of gamma ray and tool face data transmissions to allow logging while steering and sliding.

The SureShot MWD can store up to 32 MB of gamma data for retrieval during trips.

Built-in accelerometers measure axial and lateral vibration. Peak axial shock, lateral shock and temperature data are stored in on-board memory every 5 minutes, up to 5,000 hours. Information on the service history of the tool is also stored.

Lifetime log data provides valuable information to evaluate the health of the tool, and to develop preventative maintenance cycles base on the actual operating environment over time rather than total downhole hours alone.

Vibration measurements can also be used to justify claims for repairs that are a result of out-of-spec drilling conditions.

DESIGN
A rotation sensor in the directional package enables the tool to optionally transmit only gamma ray data while rotating.

MWD System Power Options

The APS MWD system uses either battery pack(s) housed in APS battery module(s) or a turbine alternator, which can be run alone or in combination with battery module(s).


Battery Modules
Use 10 x DD Lithium cells available from a number of approved suppliers (PDF).
Available in 20,000 psi (137.9 MPa) standard version with ToughMet™ barrels, plus 25,000 psi (172.4 Mpa) with Inconel 718 barrels.
Available with rubber fin centralization or pad centralization.
A novel approach to intelligent MWD batteries is coming soon from APS, featuring:
Improved battery switching and power management
Performance data logging – current draw, voltages, temperature and other parameters

Turbine Alternator
The APS Turbine Alternator† is a high-temperature, axial flow design for use in measurement-while-drilling (MWD) and logging-while-drilling (LWD) systems. This device provides reliable, ongoing power at temperatures of up to 175°C, taking the place of expensive, short-lived disposable batteries. The turbine is configurable to match the required flow rates for typical BHA/hole size combinations.

Provides rock-steady power over any run length.
Reduces or eliminates battery safety issues.
Reduces or eliminates depleted battery shipping and recycling costs.
Satisfies power requirements for advanced LWD services, which are problematic with batteries only.

MWD Pressure While Drilling Sensor

SureShot-PWD
APS’s MWD Pressure While Drilling (PWD) sensor measures annular and drill pipe pressures in all collar sizes. Captured data may be transmitted in real time via APS’s SureShot™ MWD/LWD system, or stored in downhole memory for later download and analysis. Real-time data or pressure alarms may be transmitted via SureShot.

Measurement and real-time monitoring of hydrostatic and dynamic circulating fluid pressures supports balanced, managed pressure drilling (MPD) and underbalanced drilling (UBD).

Real-time annular and bore pressure measurements help assess the optimum pressures required within narrow fracture and pore pressure windows.

Real-time determination of equivalent circulating density (ECD) for hole cleaning, swab and surge pressures for borehole stability, plus BHA pressure loss.

Timely annular, bore and differential pressure readings facilitate early detection of fluid influx and lost circulation.
MWD Vibration Memory Module

SureShot-VMM™
APS’s SureShot™ MWD Vibration Memory Module (VMM™) is a software-enabled extension to our SureShot MWD tool that measures, analyzes, records and enables real-time transmission of axial (bit bounce), lateral and torsional (stick-slip, chatter and whirl) vibrations and shocks. VMM allows users to assess the severity of downhole drilling to improve drilling efficiency and alert them to vibration conditions that could damage MWD and other downhole tools.
The real-time and memory data can be correlated to drilling events and equipment performance to improve drilling efficiency or prevent failures. The real-time and memory data can also provide evidence for use in warranty claim resolution. Real-time, memory and surface sensor data can be viewed with the SureShot VMM Viewer, plotted with APSPlot™ and exported in industry-standard formats (WITS and LAS).

Software option in SureShot Control Center (SSCC™) allows for easy addition of vibration monitoring service, reducing operating cost and increasing service flexibility.

Configurable vibration level update times for regular notifications and increased awareness of downhole drilling conditions.

Real-time vibration level alerts notify rig personnel of severe vibration conditions, allowing them to modify parameters before equipment is damaged.

Evaluation of real-time and memory vibration data and drilling parameters allows operators to optimize drilling efficiency.

Vibration data can be exported and shared with other packages or transmitted to the customer's office for easy integration into other wellsite services.
MWD Surface System Hardware

APS’s SureShot™ MWD family includes our modular approach to building MWD decoding and logging systems according to your business’s changing needs.
The base model of our expandable SureShot surface system is the Sensor Interface Unit 2 (SIU 2), which includes everything needed to measure, filter, decode, display, store, retrieve, transmit and remotely access data for basic survey jobs. A separate PC and rig floor display can be added when needed for full directional MWD capability, and a depth tracking system (DTS) SIU 2 retrofit and Printrex plotter can be added for LWD service, when required.

SureShot’s intuitive, menu-based operating system allows you to lock-out some parameter changes while allowing the field engineer to still make necessary adjustments on the job. SureShot systems are available in both “ruggedized” and “lite” versions.

Our integrated plotting package with easy-to-use graphical user interface now offers up to 8 tracks per log. This package allows the user to quickly configure and plot API RP 31A compliant* logs based on Measured Depth (MD), True Vertical Depth (TVD) and time scales. Configured header and log formats and styles can be stored as templates, separate from the log data, so that identical log presentations can be easily applied to all data sets for specific customer or situations. Log and templates can be created using SI (metric) or English units.†

SSCC GUI Windows
SSCC v5 now displays even more data to help you make good decisions faster, including:

Support for the integrated Vibration Memory Module feature in our MWD Master Controller, including new enhanced vibration memory file types.
A new Vibration Sensors screen which enables configuration and administration of all vibration sensors used on a job (e.g., VMM, VMS or AVD).
A new Vibration Action window which displays parameters of interest for analyzing vibration problems.
A new Standpipe Sensor window which shows the raw standpipe signal going into the SIU 2’s mud pulse decoding input.

APSPlot™
APS’s APSPlot™ software is a complete plotting package with easy-to-use graphical user interface. This package allows the user to quickly configure and plot API RP 31A compliant logs based on Measured Depth (MD), True Vertical Depth (TVD) and time scales. Configured header and log formats and styles can be stored as templates, separate from the log data, so that identical log presentations can be easily applied to all data sets for specific customer or situations. Logs and templates can be created using SI (metric) or English units.
